Time had run out - but not before the first and most important part was written.

They'd held out against death. They'd held out against all human opposition too. The hints were there in the text, clear enough for all to see. Yet the fears that had driven them even to the bizarre pretence of drunkenness.

The public scandal that the memoirs' publication would have caused could be avoided.
